Bladder Slings

Bladder sling is another term for a midurethral sling–a synthetic midurethral sling or a vaginal tape–and is a surgery performed to correct stress urinary incontinence or leakage that occurs with physical pressure on the bladder, such as during cough, or lifting.

At the Women’s Health Institute of Illinois, this surgery is almost always performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.

A tiny incision is made just under the bladder opening and the sling is positioned to act as a new ligament to maintain the urethra in a closed position during activity to prevent urine leakage.
