Urinary Incontinence in Chicago, Illinois

What is Urinary Incontinence?

It is the involuntary loss of urine.

Types of Urinary Incontinence

What is stress incontinence?

It is the loss of urine with sudden increase in physical stress on the bladder, such as cough or sneeze, etc.

Treatment options include:

  • observation
  • pelvic muscle exercise ideally with the guidance of a pelvic floor physical therapist
  • pessary (device worn in the vagina)
  • Renessa® - radiofrequency collagen denaturation (30 minute office procedure, which heats the collagen around the urethra)
  • midurethral sling surgery (30 minute surgery performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure)

Clinical trials (options currently undergoing research):

  • in-office sling surgery
  • balloon device - which acts as a ‘shock-absorber’ in the bladder - worn for a year at a time

What is urge incontinence?

Also known as "overactive bladder," it is the sudden loss, usually of large amounts of urine, preceded by a strong urge to urinate.

Treatment options include:

  • observation
  • pelvic floor physical therapy (to decrease tone of hyperactive muscles)
  • anticholinergic medication (oral, skin patch or skin gel)
  • injection of Botox® into the bladder muscle
  • Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation aka Urgent PC® (electrical stimulation to adjust the S3 bladder control center) applied at the ankle for 12 weekly 30 minute sessions
  • Interstim® (surgically implanted “pacemaker” device that provides electrical current to the lower back - S3) to reset the bladder control center
